How to Wear a Surgical Gown — Ten Steps

Correct gowning is fundamental to maintaining the sterile field. The procedure below follows AORN recommended practices.

  1. Perform surgical hand antisepsis per facility policy.
  2. Approach the gown package opened on a sterile field; lift the gown by the inside shoulder seams.
  3. Hold the gown away from the body and allow it to unfold.
  4. Identify the neckline; slide both arms simultaneously into the sleeves.
  5. Have the circulating nurse pull the gown up over the shoulders from inside.
  6. The circulator ties the inside neck and waist ties without touching the outer sterile surface.
  7. Don sterile gloves using closed or open technique.
  8. Hand the cardboard tag attached to the front waist tie to a sterile team member.
  9. Turn 360° to receive the front waist tie back, then secure.
  10. Verify the entire front of the gown from chest to sterile field level remains sterile.

If at any step contamination is suspected, re-gown immediately. Document any breaks in sterile technique on the procedural record.
